In a somber development that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria and beyond, former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away in London.

The news was confirmed by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, via a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). According to Ahmad, the family of the late president announced his passing earlier today at a clinic in London, where he had been receiving medical attention.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” Ahmad posted.

President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, also previously held power as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985. His legacy is marked by a strong anti-corruption stance and various efforts to stabilize the Nigerian economy during challenging times.

A former Major General in the Nigerian Army, Buhari’s political career was defined by a commitment to discipline, accountability, and national security. His administration was notable for prioritizing infrastructure development, agricultural revival, and social investment programs.

As Nigerians at home and abroad react to the news, tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, international allies, and citizens who either admired his governance or critically engaged with it over the years.

Details regarding his burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family soon, in accordance with Islamic rites.
