2027: Abia Opposition Parties Close Ranks to Challenge Otti

Opposition political parties in Abia State have begun early political manoeuvres ahead of the 2027 general elections, forming a broad coalition aimed at challenging the administration of Governor Alex Otti.

The coalition, operating under the platform “Our Team,” is made up largely of former governors and senior political figures who played prominent roles in the governance of Abia State between 1999 and 2023. According to its leaders, the group is determined to chart a new political direction for the state and enthrone a new government by 2027.

Although the official electioneering season is still some distance away, political activities in the state appear to be gaining momentum. Observers say tensions are already rising, with signs pointing to a potentially intense political contest between the current administration and a regrouped opposition.

In what is being described as a rare political alignment, former democratically elected governors of Abia State from 1999 to 2023 have come together under a common umbrella to challenge the incumbent governor.

The decision was reached at an enlarged meeting held at the residence of a former governor of Abia State (2007–2015) and former two-term Senator representing Abia Central, Theodore Ahamefula Orji.

At the meeting, the opposition leaders announced that they had agreed to set aside party affiliations in order to present a united front against the current administration.

They explained that their resolve was influenced by what they described as persistent attacks on their personalities and repeated claims by the present government that Abia State was left as a “desert” after 24 years of democratic rule—remarks they said they consider insulting to their legacies.

At the end of the meeting, the group issued a communiqué, resolving to intensify political consultations and engagements across the state in pursuit of their shared objective.

The coalition also disclosed plans to institute legal action against the Abia State Government and Governor Alex Otti. According to them, governance should be conducted from Government House, Umuahia, the state’s official seat of power, rather than Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, where the governor is currently operating.

In addition, the group commended the appointment of the immediate past governor of the state as an Ambassador-Designate and pledged support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election.

The group, known as “Our Team,” comprises individuals who served under successive democratically elected governments in Abia State from 1999 to 2023.

Those present at the meeting included former governors Orji Uzor Kalu and Theodore Ahamefula Orji, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, alongside other former high-ranking government officials.

As political alignments continue to take shape well ahead of 2027, analysts believe Abia State may be heading toward a closely watched and highly competitive election.
