Resident Doctors’ Strike Deepens Patients’ Hardship at FMC Umuahia

The ongoing strike by resident doctors in Nigeria is taking a serious toll on patients at the federal medical center FMC) Umuahia who depend on the facility for regular medical care.

Many of these patients said they could not afford missed appointments or delayed medical reviews.

Nurses, consultants, and other available staff are trying to manage the workload, but the pressure has resulted in slower service delivery. Some elective surgeries have been postponed, while emergency cases take longer to attend to due to reduced manpower.

Some said they had been asked to return on later dates, while others are now considering private facilities, which many cannot afford. The strike has particularly affected diabetes patients who require regular monitoring, with some appearing visibly dejected as they wait without clear information about when services will fully resume.

Health experts warn that interruptions in chronic disease management can lead to complications, higher medical costs, and increased hospital admissions. They emphasize the need for consistent care, especially for patients requiring daily or weekly medical attention.

The situation has also created operational strain within the hospital, with remaining staff handling additional responsibilities. Despite their efforts, service delivery remains limited compared to normal operations.

Stakeholders are calling for a quick resolution to the industrial action to prevent further deterioration of patients’ health. They also urge the government and hospital management to address the concerns of resident doctors while ensuring that essential services are maintained during such strikes.

As negotiations continue, patients at FMC Umuahia remain hopeful that normal medical services will resume soon.
