Tinubu Hails Otti as Remodeled Michael Okpara Auditorium Shines in Umuahia

Umuahia came alive on Friday as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, commissioned the newly remodeled Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium, one of the signature projects of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.

The historic structure, named after the revered Premier of Eastern Nigeria, had long been the centerpiece for state functions and civic activities. Decades after it was first built, the once dilapidated facility has now been given a breathtaking facelift under Governor Otti’s drive for infrastructural renewal.

Speaking at the event, President Tinubu commended Governor Otti for his commitment to rebuilding Abia, describing the transformation of the auditorium and other ongoing projects as a “miracle of infrastructure.”

“I lived and worked here in Umuahia as a young engineer. I know what this route used to be like. But today, I saw a miracle. Beyond the roads, this auditorium is another wonder—an edifice that truly honors the late Dr. Michael Okpara,” Umahi said while conveying the President’s message.

The Minister explained that the President’s absence was due to his attendance at the burial of the APC National Chairman’s mother but assured that Tinubu would personally visit Abia later in December. He also emphasized the President’s recognition of the Southeast’s role in national politics.

Quoting the President, Umahi said:

“Mr. President has great respect for the late Dr. Michael Okpara. He urged the Southeast to emulate his style of politics—playing to the center and integrating our people into the mainstream of governance.”

On his part, Governor Otti expressed joy at handing over the reconstructed facility, recalling its dilapidated state before renovation began in 2023.

“This is the Michael Okpara Auditorium which we met in a terrible state. Towards the end of 2023, we began its reconstruction. Today, it stands as an edifice worthy of its name and purpose,” Otti declared.

With its modern facelift, the Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium is set to reclaim its place as the cultural and political heartbeat of Abia, symbolizing both the legacy of the past and the promise of a renewed future.
