Abia Govt Set for November Rollout of Electric Buses, Advances Creative Economy Plans

In a significant step towards modernizing public transportation and fostering youth empowerment, the Abia State Government has revealed that 30 electric mass transit buses currently being manufactured in China will arrive in the State by November 2025.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a press briefing on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to the Commissioner, routes for the buses have already been mapped out, and necessary logistics are in place to ensure a seamless rollout of the electric bus scheme under the State’s Mass Transit Initiative.

“The buses are being fabricated in China. Payment has been made, and we expect delivery around November. Routes have been identified, and the required logistics for a smooth launch are ready,” Prince Kanu stated.

This initiative forms a critical part of Governor Otti’s vision to enhance urban mobility, reduce environmental pollution, and promote innovation in public transport systems across the State.

Prince Kanu also announced plans for a statewide talent hunt scheduled for July 25, aimed at discovering and promoting artistic and creative talents across Abia’s 17 Local Government Areas.

He emphasized that the program aligns with the administration’s broader goals of grassroots empowerment and building a robust creative economy.

“This programme will promote youth inclusion and empower our young people across all LGAs. It’s a vital part of our cultural innovation strategy,” he added.

In a bold move to put Abia on the global creative map, the State is also working closely with UNESCO and the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy to position Aba as a UNESCO Creative City. A delegation is expected in Aba this week for an early-stage assessment.

🚧 Road Projects: 8 Completed, 6 New Sites Added Despite Rains

Speaking on infrastructure, Prince Kanu said the government is undeterred by the rainy season, with major construction works ongoing across the state.

Out of 53 active road projects, eight have been completed, while six new roads have been added to the construction pipeline.

Some of the recently completed roads include:

Chief Nkoro Street in Abayi, Aba Amefu Road in Obingwa LGA Afikpo Road, off Aguiyi Ironsi Layout in Aba Ugba-Ibeku Road in Umuahia Eluama Road in Uzuakoli, among others

The Commissioner reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure across both urban and rural areas.
