Gov. Otti Commissions 150 kVA Solar Power System at Abia Specialist Hospital, Targets Sustainable Healthcare Delivery

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Wednesday, July 17, 2025, commissioned a 150 kVA Solar Power Project at the Abia State Specialist and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, in a move aimed at guaranteeing uninterrupted power supply for critical health services in the facility.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Otti described the project as a landmark achievement in his administration’s drive to establish sustainable infrastructure and reduce reliance on fossil fuel-powered generators.

“This is a major step toward sustainable infrastructure,” Governor Otti stated, expressing satisfaction that the hospital now has a cleaner, more reliable energy source to power its essential services.

The newly commissioned solar system is designed to serve as the hospital’s primary energy source, while the national power grid will serve as a secondary backup, effectively eliminating the need for diesel generators and their associated costs and emissions.

In his technical briefing, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, revealed that the system includes:

A 430 kWh battery storage unit A 100 kVA inverter system dedicated to the Eye and Pediatrics Clinics An additional 50 kVA solar system installed exclusively for the hospital’s emergency theatre

These facilities are expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to respond to life-saving procedures, maintain critical equipment, and ensure smooth service delivery.

“With this project, we are reducing our dependence on the grid and embracing cleaner, more efficient energy alternatives,” the Commissioner noted.

He commended Governor Otti for his continued support, describing the initiative as a testament to the administration’s commitment to energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and quality healthcare delivery.

Governor Otti’s administration has consistently emphasized the importance of renewable energy as part of its broader development agenda. The solar power project at the Abia Specialist Hospital now serves as a pilot model for similar installations across key government institutions in the state.
